About the Speaker

Jean Chrysostome K Kiyala is a senior lecturer at the International Centre of Nonviolence (ICON), Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS), Durban University of Technology (DUT), South Africa. Kiyala holds a diploma in philosophy from St Augustine University of Kinshasa, Kinshasa (DRC); a Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil) from Pontifical Urbaniana University (Rome); a diploma in Theology, a Bachelor of Theology (BTh) and a Bachelor’s in Mission Studies from Tangaza University College (Nairobi); a Honours in Religion Education from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (Nairobi); a second BTh from Pontifical Urbaniana University (Rome); a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Religion Education and Pastoral Theology from St Augustine College of South Africa (Johannesburg); a conferred Master of Technology (MTech) in Public Administration from DUT (Durban) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Management Sciences specialising in Public Administration in the Peacebuilding Programme from DUT (Durban).

 Kiyala is the recipient of noteworthy and acknowledged scholarships that include the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) Postdoctoral Research Fellow Scholarship (2017–2019), NRF Free Standing Doctoral Scholarship (2014–2016), DUT Doctoral Scholarship (2013) and the St Augustine College of South Africa (Catholic University) MPhil Scholarship (2007–2010). Kiyala is also the recipient of four awards, namely the Future Professors Programme Appointment Award from DUT (2024– 2027), a Certificate of Recognition for Most Published Research Fellow in the DUT FMS for 2022, awarded on 12 May 2023 and the DUT Research Directorate Publication Recognition Award 2022 for the book Child soldiers and restorative justice: Participatory action research in the Eastern DRC (Springer, 2018). Kiyala was awarded an NRF C2-rating in 2024. Kiyala’s fields of research interest encompass child soldiers, peacebuilding, nonviolence, civil society, post-conflict nation reconstruction, transitional justice, public administration, peace ecology and Indigenous restorative justice processes. Kiyala is an associate editor for the Springer Nature Switzerland book series, The Anthropocene Politik–Economics–Society–Science (APESS). He has published a monograph, co-edited two books and has two additional co-edited books forthcoming. Furthermore, he has authored seven peerreviewed journal articles, 22 peer-reviewed book chapters and one nonreferred book chapter.

a.       Assignment guidelines

 i.            Each assignment can be between 1500-2000 words

 ii.            A4, Times Roman, Font size 12

 iii.            Assignment can be hand written or typed. However, it has to be submitted in PDF       Format.

 iv.            Title Page of the Assignment should have the following details in the given sequence

·               Title of the Program (IFPNP2025)

·               Assignment No.   (Assignment 1 or 2 or 3)

·               Title of the Assignment

·               Name of the writer

·               Date of submission

    v.            Name of the PDF file should contain the following

       vi.   Last date for the submission of first month assignment is January 3, 2026

b.      Assignment Topic

    i.            Assignment for the third month - December

Compare and contrast the roots, dynamics and possible solutions of two case studies examined in this program.  In this context, discuss one tradition of Nonviolent Action which you identify with most personally and why?

 

 2.Project                                                        

By the middle of December, each one of will choose a project topic and carryout it, with the help of the guide / mentor assigned by the organizer.

 The broad areas are outlined below on the basis of that 4 groups will be made

 Group 1. Sustainability

Group 2. Fundamentals of Gandhian Nonviolence and Peace

Group 3.  Dealing with Conflict

Group 4. Peace and Nonviolence

 In case if you have not yet informed the specific area or group in which they would like to undertake the project, please do at the earliest. This is for assigning mentors for each candidate.

 3.  Attendance: Complete attendance expected. Attendance less than 80 percent   indicates, ‘Course-not-completed’
