About the Speaker
Jean Chrysostome K Kiyala is a senior lecturer at the International Centre
of Nonviolence (ICON), Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS), Durban
University of Technology (DUT), South Africa. Kiyala holds a diploma in
philosophy from St Augustine University of Kinshasa, Kinshasa (DRC); a
Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil) from Pontifical Urbaniana University
(Rome); a diploma in Theology, a Bachelor of Theology (BTh) and a
Bachelor’s in Mission Studies from Tangaza University College (Nairobi); a
Honours in Religion Education from the Catholic University of Eastern
Africa (Nairobi); a second BTh from Pontifical Urbaniana University (Rome);
a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Religion Education and Pastoral Theology
from St Augustine College of South Africa (Johannesburg); a conferred
Master of Technology (MTech) in Public Administration from DUT (Durban)
and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Management Sciences specialising in
Public Administration in the Peacebuilding Programme from DUT (Durban).
Kiyala is the recipient of noteworthy and acknowledged scholarships
that include the South African National Research Foundation (NRF)
Postdoctoral Research Fellow Scholarship (2017–2019), NRF Free Standing
Doctoral Scholarship (2014–2016), DUT Doctoral Scholarship (2013) and
the St Augustine College of South Africa (Catholic University) MPhil
Scholarship (2007–2010). Kiyala is also the recipient of four awards, namely
the Future Professors Programme Appointment Award from DUT (2024–
2027), a Certificate of Recognition for Most Published Research Fellow in
the DUT FMS for 2022, awarded on 12 May 2023 and the DUT Research
Directorate Publication Recognition Award 2022 for the book Child soldiers
and restorative justice: Participatory action research in the Eastern DRC
(Springer, 2018). Kiyala was awarded an NRF C2-rating in 2024.
Kiyala’s fields of research interest encompass child soldiers, peacebuilding,
nonviolence, civil society, post-conflict nation reconstruction, transitional
justice, public administration, peace ecology and Indigenous restorative justice
processes. Kiyala is an associate editor for the Springer Nature Switzerland book series, The Anthropocene Politik–Economics–Society–Science (APESS).
He has published a monograph, co-edited two books and has two additional
co-edited books forthcoming. Furthermore, he has authored seven peerreviewed journal articles, 22 peer-reviewed book chapters and one nonreferred book chapter.
